It is "Durgapuja" in Kolkata now, the biggest festival of the year celebrating the worship of goddess Durga. According to Hindu mythology, goddess Durga comes to the earth for four days in Autumn, alongwith her four children. In the panel above, from left, Lord Ganesh (god of success), Lakshmi (goddess of wealth), Durga (goddess of power) slaying the demon Mahisasur, Saraswati (goddess of knowledge), and Kartik (god of war). You can see a collection of Durgapuja pictures at http://suvro.com/durgapuja.

Like any other festivals of its size, Durgapuja has significant effect on the local economy at all levels, including the livelihood of many common people. Here are some "People Pictures" of a few of them.

A brahmin priest, who performs the rites of worship.

The drummers, without whom the festival doesn't feel like it.
