Durgapuja (the worship of Goddess Durga), the biggest festival in Bengal, is only couple of weeks away, and an arist is giving the last touch of paints on one of the idols he is working on. This picture was taken in 2001 just before Durgapuja in the Kumartuli area of Kolkata, home of several hundred artists and artisans who make a living by building these idols; a skill that is passed through the generations.

The picture below was taken in another artist's studio in Kumartuli on the same day. It is an idol of Goddess durga in near completion.
