She was about four. They called her Buri. In 1987 when I was a graduate student in Pittsburgh, me and some other friends went to a picnic in a park little bit outside the city. That's where I met her and took this picture. A few months later, this was my first picture that got published, in Pentax-Life magazine. It was such a thrill to see my own work printed for the first time.

Many years have past since then. Buri is probably going to the university now. Still, when I look at those mesmeric eyes conveying the innocence of childhood, it feels like I can stare at this picture forever.
