A few years ago in Kolkata, me and a photographer friend of mine were hunting for good subjects for photography, and following the Ganges upstream, we found this place called Kutighat in the Barahnagar area where they have a wholesale bamboo market. That is where this picture was taken. Bamboos are easily transported on the water, and that makes it convenient to have a market by the river. In the picture below, the bamboos have made it to the city. Now they are not just bamboos, they are scaffoldings, and being useful at the renovation of a hotel building in Kolkata downtown. They are extensively used in constructions in this region. |
