Lord Ganesha, the elephant headed god, is probably the most popular Hindu deity. Lord Ganesh is the remover of obstacles, and he is propitiated as the beginning of every undertaking. Not only he is worshipped almost all over india and on all occations, he is a very popular figure for decoration pieces like miniature and large statues of various materials including stone, plaster, wood, and paper masse, as well as artworks on papers and fabrics. This picture was taken last October during Durgapuja, the biggest festival in eastern India. The figures like this are built only for the worship ceremony, and then immersed into the Ganges river on the day after that. |
