will open soon

Recently I got a book, "Chasing Rickshaws" by Wheeler/I'anson, with very interesting text and photographs of rickshaws in different parts of the world. That inspired me to share this picture with you. A hand pulled rickshaw on one of the major arterial streets in central Calcutta (now Kolkata).

This picture was taken a few years ago. Hand pulled rickshaws are almost extinct now from the face of the earth, but in this city they exist in full strength and almost in the same original form, transporting both people and goods.

Here is another modified version of the rickshaw that you will find in many parts of India, with pedaled wheels and a flat seat designed to carry goods (people are allowed also, if needed).

An announcement : PPI (People for Progress in India, a Seattle-based organization active in addressing socio-economic problems in India), is having their annual fundraiser dinner on March 15, 2003. If you are interested, please call Suresh Ramachandran at 425-836-3852 or visit http://ppi-usa.org for more information.

Here is the links to the photopages of last week, and the week before that. Enjoy.
