Minimalism

Minimalism (in the context of photography of course) is hard to define, but can loosely be considered as the idea of reducing visuals to the most basic form. Which means making an image excluding all the elements (shapes, structures, forms, lines, textures and so on) that are not primarily necessary. With all those distraction eliminated, now it lets you focus on the bare essentials of the image.

Minimalism is a particular style. Like any other style, there is no good or bad implicit in it. It may or may not work well depending on the subject. Below is an image from the other end of the spectrum. An extremely busy image (of the same fisherman's terminal where the first picture was taken). In this case it is indeed hard to find a specific point to focus on. Yet, this can be a very successful image as a centerfold or a mural covering a large portion of the wall that you can stare at for a long time.
