When I started developing an interest in photography in my mid teens, one of the first things I learned
was about gradation and contrast of black and white prints.
Later as a darkroom enthuciast I picked up the techniques of controlling contrast during printmaking,
which can be done using different grades of photopapers, filters and chemicals. One particularly interesting
style was to make the contrast extreme, where you have pitch black and blank white, and nothing in between.
Times have changed, and all those effects can now be achieved just in seconds by clicking a few buttons.
The result if often called 1-bit image in technical terms.
Here are couple of examples of that.
The exact opposite would be an image with high gradation, where you have dark black and bright white,
as well as many shades of grey covering the range in between, like this one.
