In the Snow

Winter is here, and we certainly had a white Christmas in Seattle this time.

Photographing snow is a rather chalanging job, not for the fact that you will gave to get out in the bitter cold and walk on a surface that does not allow normal walking, but for the fact that determining the correct exposure for snow pictures is not easy.

If you rely on the cameras metering system, you will probably end up with grey shades of snow which is devoid of any charm. About one or two stops of overexposure looks better and gives the feeling of whiteness that your eyes experience. But be careful not to overexpose it too much, or you may loose all the details of the snow.

That is what happened here though. I deliberately did that, to capture the snow-clad pine trees in the background at the desired brightness. The sled included in the foreground adds a point of interest to focus on.

Here is an unusual view of an usual object; the residencial mailboxes topped with fresh snow. The last one is of some roadside plants with a brick wall in the background. All these three pictures were taken within minutes from one another.
