My workplace is located by a canal, where an accidental oil spill from a boat happened in last May. Thin film of oil floating on water creates beautiful patterns of color. I took this unique opportunity to shoot some pictures of that spilt oil floating on the canal water. The images you are seeing here are in true colors (not pseudocolor), only with some saturation added. The color of thin film depends on the thickness of the film. The fact that the oil film has slightly different thickness at different places, generate the spectrum of colors. You can create one yourself. Use two liquids that don’t mix and don’t evaporate quickly, and drop a small quantity of the lighter liquid on top of the heavier one in a container with dark bottom. White light from a wide source (like cloudy sky) would provide the best lighting.
