Environmental portraits, that is, portraits that include the persons surroundings in the background; the environment that the subjects belongs to, or closely associated to in some way. In this case the background is just as important as the human figure, and composition plays a strong role.

Here are two of such portraits. Both were taken last month in India. The top one is in a Mela (streetfair) where a seller of paintings is sipping on a cup of tea to start his day. The second one was shot at the same Mela in a shop of artificial flowers. Here the mans face is barely visible. The focus is more on on his activity and his environment.

The last picture was taken around the same time in the same area - Shantiniketan of West Bengal. It also includes the a person and her surroundings, but it would be difficult to classify this image as a portrait photo, although the importance of the human figure in this image is fairly strong.
