Polarizer filters are very popular for cutting down reflections off the glass or water surface. They are also used for enhancing the blue of the sky, and removing atmospheric haze which is particularly useful for aerial photography. But the capability of the polarizer goes far beyond that, and it can be used for creating special effects like the picture above.

The method is rather simple. Get a polarizer sheet (I purchased one online for $12), place it on a glass table or a light box, and put the clear plastic forks on it. Put a polarizer filter on the lens of the camera and point it to the forks, and you will see those striking colors appearing. Want more fun? Rotate the polarizer filter and you will see the colors changing. This technique will work for any clear plastic objects.

The picture below was shot in the same manner, and then I digitally added a similar pattern in the background. Both the pictures were taken with a Canon Digital Rebel camera and Canon 18-55mm lens.
