During my last trip to India, I had the opportunity to meet couple of Jhumar (folk dance) groups in Rajasthan. This kind of folk dances are popular in rural areas and are performed in open air usually in the evenings. The group moves together as a family, including small children although they don’t take part in the performance. Here is a picture of some of the members of a Jhumar group.
Here are two pictures taken during a performance. In these groups, the men play the role of the musicians and women are the dancers. The man on the right in colorful turban is Mr. Bishram Nath, the proprietor of this group. The last picture shows a form where the dancer balances a stack of pots. It is amazing to watch how they move around freely with the stack of five, six or even more pots on the head. |
